I was recently serving a little time in jail, or “the big house” as I liked to refer to it. While I was there I had a cell mate, and there isn’t a whole lot to do in jail, so we talked a lot. He was in for the same thing I was in for which was battery.

As for me, I was in a bar with a couple of friends, and I saw a guy hit his girlfriend. My friends told me to stay out of it, but I couldn’t. It’s just not right for guys to hit girls. So I went over and got in his face. He swung a beer bottle at me and narrowly missed. I ended up smashing his face into the table breaking his nose and knocking out a few of his teeth. Despite several witnesses saying I was defending myself, the judge saw it differently.

My cell mate’s story was almost identical, except he was defending a friend who had gotten in an argument. Only with me (I’m a welder), my job is not in jeopardy. Language, Culture, and Old Age

I live in an area that has a lot of Spanish-speaking people, mostly from Mexico and South America. (Even though I live in a city full of them, I don't really know what the polite term is — I know Mexicans is considered somewhat derogatory and misleading, since they don't all come from Mexico, but I don't know about other terms such as Hispanics and Latinos. Anyway, my rambling aside, one thing that I've noticed the large Spanish-speaking population has done to our area is mandate that a lot of things be in both English and Spanish. Bus information, fast food menus and signs, etc. are all given in Spanish now as well as English.

If you think about it, this has far-reaching implications for society. Because people aren't forced to learn English, there are all kinds of things that have to be provided in their language for them. For instance, Spanish-speaking nurses and home care providers are now in demand, because elderly Spanish-speaking people need care from people they can understand, right?

As a result, if you go for home care training you will probably be much more in demand if you speak Spanish, and if not in some areas your training will probably include some basic Spanish instruction. Many companies who are training in home care providers are finding that Spanish caregiver resources are a necessity, as they are getting many more Spanish-speaking students in their programs than they once would have.

I'm not an advocate of forcing everyone to speak English, however — I just think it's interesting to see what ramifications becoming more multilingual will have on our society!

Pink Eye

My eye was bothering me a couple days ago, and it itched all day long. Then yesterday I get up, look in the mirror, and I have full blown pink eye. That’s just great. So I call work and tell them I won’t be in because now I have to go the doctor and get something to take care of this. Then I called the doctors office, and they were able to get me in that afternoon.

My self diagnosis proved to be accurate. The doctor didn’t waste a whole lot of time examining me, and was able to confirm that it was indeed pink eye very quickly. He gave me a prescription for some eye drops and I was on my way. I think I spent more time at the pharmacy than I did with the doctor. Why it takes the pharmacists so long to print up a tag for some eye drops and stick it in a bag is beyond me.

Pink eye is very contagious, so after I got back from the doctor, I got to thinking about if I might have spread it to anyone. Like what if the doctor got pink eye? He certainly would not be able to work until it went away. Fortunately it goes away quickly enough that he wouldn’t have to rely on disability insurance if disability insurance companies actually sell disability insurance for physicians. Lucky for me though, I can go right back to work. I just need to use some eye drops and wash my hands a lot.

Halloween entertainment for your children and pets

Every year our local animal shelter has a Halloween party for children and their pets. There is always lots of fun and treats for the kids. There are also contests for the best costumes, and not just for the kids. At this Halloween party the furry friends are the center of attention. Everywhere you look there are dogs, and even some cats, dressed up in their best Halloween wear.

This event is something that everyone looks forward to. All animal lovers come out with their pets deck out in the coolest and most creative pet costumes. Everything from simply grabbing a shirt and putting in on their pet to elaborate dog costumes purchased on line. And believe me, some of those costume are more detailed and elaborate than the ones the children are wearing.

Last year a family arrived with their three pooches and each one was dressed as a character from Star Wars. And so were the children. All together they looked like they had the whole cast of characters covered!

This year I’m thinking that we’ll join in on the fun and take our dogs down. We’ve tried to dress them up in the past but they hated it. But oddly enough they don’t mind wearing Halloween wigs for some reason, so we can always put some afros on them and have disco dogs.

Sports that Lead to Careers

Some people are so adept at sports that they end up being able to compete in their favorite athletic activities at a professional level and end up doing them as a job that they absolutely love. Most people are moderately good at sports to the point where they can enjoy them as hobbies although a lot of those people let their interest in sports wane as they get older and move into professional jobs. A few people find a middle ground and manage to choose sports that lead them to decent jobs.

Golf is one such sport. People who attend a golf academy to get an education in the sport of golf can end up having a golf career even if they aren't skilled enough at the game to be able to compete on a professional level. Golf schools give them enough well-rounded information about the industry that they can play golf, teach golf or make golf-related sales and garner a decent income.

Not all sports are as well-suited to this kind of middle-of-the-road approach to making a career out of them. But then, not all people are suited to either playing sports professionally or not playing them at all. Those people who are seeking out a middle ground should be looking at sports like golf to try to make that road work out for them.
